About me
After graduating from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts with a BFA in film production, Eliot Kissileff attended the Institute of Audio Research before landing a job at Electric Lady Studios in 1996. With the goal of learning how to make vintage-sounding recordings for free using modern large-format consoles, Eliot eventually attained the position of chief technician, clocking in several thousand hours of mix time in the process.
In 2001 he went to work as a tech in the mix and audio post rooms at the massive Sony Music Studios. While there, he was able to utilize the mastering rooms, mix rooms as well as study video editing. When Sony closed in 2007, he started at Universal Mastering East where he was able to work on mastering and mixing catalog music, creating stems of hit songs for Rock Band and Guitar Hero, among other applications. He became an analog transfer engineer, working on projects for the Allman Brothers Band, Eric Clapton, numerous Motown and Bob Dylan projects as well as hundreds of uncredited transfers for third-party licensing projects.
In 2014, while still working freelance for UMG, he began working for Academy Award-winning film director Murray Lerner, earning mixing and production credits on Lerner's final three concert films which featured Joni Mitchell, The Doors, and Rory Gallagher’s Taste. Additionally, Eliot worked on Lerner’s Newport Folk Festival 1963-66 footage, synching and editing the 80 hours of performances captured by Lerner’s crew.
In 2020, he began working at Historic Films archives in Greenport, NY, learning the art of film scanning and film/video preservation. Eliot's freelance stem mix work for UMG continues, and with the onset of dolby atmos, he now does stem mixing of entire albums.
Having amassed a collection of antiquated tape and film playback devices - including some of the only operational synchronized 35mm mag machines on the east coast - Eliot recently started a freelance Audio/Video/Film transfer and consulting business, Music and Media Preservation Services.
